Katherine Schneller—local dance teacher, coach, duck farmer, and assistant director at Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center—works with horses on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, at Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center in Columbia—the week before the center officially opened for the fall season. Even though she spent a lot of her childhood at the center, she said she didn’t fully understand how cool it was until she went off to college. She says working there is one of the most rewarding things in the world, and she enjoys the hard labor aspect of it. “If I’m not at the farm lifting buckets, and making horses do crazy things and getting stepped on or all kinds of weird shit, I'm in a dance studio, making my body do other things that aren't very nice to it,” Schneller said. “I just don't ever sit and do nothing.”

Tap dancer, teacher and artist Chris Rutledge scuffs his heel in the paint on a wooden canvas during the beginning stages of making a painting on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, in Columbia. “It’s literally just being able to have something to create with what I do as a tap dancer,” Rutledge said about his TapArt. “And it’s just brought me out of so many mental health issues, abandonment issues. You can leave that stuff, just a little bit, and just kind of do things. And I’ve thought about this a lot – would I continue to do this if it never became popular? Would I continue to do it if nobody bought them ever or valued the idea of what’s going on? Would I do it? Ten years later I guess I can say - yeah, yeah I would.”
